Team up to ride better, change lives

Riding in a group—in some cases called a peloton—can cut an individual rider’s effort by a third or more. You go farther more easily. If you are thinking about taking the plunge for the Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic’s new mountain century, the Buff Epic, or our classic Foothills Century, joining a team is a good way to roll.

Here’s another reason: Teams raise most of the extra donations to the Buff Bike Classic scholarship fund.

It’s more than an epic climb; it’s a scholarship.

Your Buffalo Bicycle Classic registration fee supports the scholarship fund, of course. But we host a team competition to recognize those who offer additional support for good students in financial need. The three teams raising the most donations will receive an award at the annual scholarship awards ceremony.

We started registration this month and already have 10 registered teams. Start your own now!

Organizing a team is a snap. You can form a new team while registering. Recruit friends and colleagues. Post a notice at work. Ask your company to pony up and sponsor your team.

The Buffalo Bicycle Classic has six different rides: the Buff Epic, Foothills Century, 70-mile Carter Lake Climb, 50-mile Half Century, 35-mile Mary’s Loop, and the 14-mile Little Buff for families, kids and easy riders. This year, the Little Buff is co-sponsored by the Center for People With Disabilities.

Team members do not have to ride together or even ride the same distance. What counts is the additional altruism—from registrants themselves or their friends, family or employers.

Stay tuned for tips on bike maintenance, training and more. Meanwhile…

The Buff goes Epic. Ready to climb like a pro?

Boulder Canyon’s calling. The time to answer is now.

Registration for the 2012 Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic opens March 1.

This year we are adding a new event: the Buff Epic, a new and challenging century ride. This is truly an Epic route, and we’re not the only ones who think so. Buff Epic participants will ride nearly 60 miles along the most mountainous section of Stage 6 of the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

We will start with a majestic ascent through Boulder Canyon—you heard us right, Boulder Canyon (which will be closed to uphill motor traffic for the event). It will then roll through Nederland, climb past Ward on the Peak to Peak Highway and then descend St. Vrain Canyon to Lyons, where the course will head east to Erie and back to Boulder.

If that’s not reason enough to ride, consider this:

It’s more than an epic climb; it’s a scholarship.

The Buffalo Bicycle Classic is celebrating its tenth annual ride. We’ve already raised more than $1.6 million in scholarships for University of Colorado students, and we’re striving to make this our best year yet!

Buff Epic registration will be limited to 1,000 riders. So register now, and mark your calendars for the ride date: Sept. 9, 2012.

If you’re not up for the Buff Epic, do not fret. As always, we offer routes for the whole range of cyclists. Our classic 100-mile ride, now called the Foothills Century ride, plus the 70-mile Carter Lake Climb, 50-mile Half-Century Ride, 35-mile Ride and the 14-mile “Little Buff” Ride are still available. After a decade, though, we know some riders yearn for a new and exciting challenge.

The Buff just got Epic. You up for it?

Boulder Canyon beckons.

This year, the Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic celebrates its tenth annual event. We’ve already raised more than $1.6 million in scholarships for University of Colorado students. Now we’re aiming for new heights—about 9,000 feet, in fact.

The Buffalo Bicycle Classic is adding a new event in 2012: the Buff Epic, a new and challenging century.

The ride will start with a majestic ascent through Boulder Canyon—you heard us right, Boulder Canyon (which will be closed to uphill motor traffic for the event). It will then roll through Nederland, past Ward and complete a scenic loop north on the Peak to Peak Highway before returning to the foothills and Boulder.

Mark your calendars for Sept. 9, 2012. Registration opens March 1, and Buff Epic registration will be limited.

We remain committed to the broad range of cycling preferences. Our traditional, Front Range century and shorter rides (70, 50, 35, and 14-mile Little Buff) will still be available. But after a decade, we know some riders seek a Rocky Mountain high. There’s much more to come. Save the date and stay tuned!

About The Ride

The Buffalo Bicycle Classic is a cycling fundraiser. Since 2003, more than $1.6 million in scholarships have been awarded to promising students in CU-Boulder’s College of Arts and Sciences. The ride is the single largest source of scholarships within the CU College of Arts and Sciences, which is the largest and oldest college at the university.

In recent years, the ride has attracted well more than 2,000 participants -- CU alumni, kids in trailers, professional cyclists and everyone in between. Participants choose a course from several options and ride at their own pace. The shortest course, the "Little Buff," explores the wonderful bike path network in the City of Boulder. The longest course is a true century. And in 2012, we're adding the Buff Epic, a new century that begins by climbing up Boulder Canyon.
